2011 Sachsenring MotoGP FP3 Result: Lorenzo Edges Pedrosa And Simoncelli

Jorge Lorenzo had ended Marco Simoncelli's hegemony of the MotoGP class, the factory Yamaha rider squeaking ahead of Dani Pedrosa in the final minutes of the third session of free practice. Simoncelli and the Hondas had made the early running, but the Yamahas came better as the session progressed, Lorenzo besting the Hondas at the every end. Pedrosa, who had also come good at the end of the session, looked to have just squeezed past Simoncelli until Lorenzo came in, finishing up four hundredths behind Lorenzo, and six thousandths ahead of Simoncelli. Simoncelli had been slowed temporarily by a crash at the fast Turn 11, though he was quickly back out on his second bike.

Casey Stoner ended the session 4th fastest, not quite able to match the pace of the front three, but ending just ahead of his other Repsol Honda teammate Andrea Dovizioso. Nicky Hayden was once again the fastest Ducati, four tenths off Lorenzo, while the better conditions - dry, sunny and relatively warm - saw Alvaro Bautista improve up to 7th on the Rizla Suzuki. Ben Spies was 8th on the second factory Yamaha, while Randy de Puniet ended the session in 9th on the Pramac Ducati. Colin Edwards rounds out the top 10 on the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha.
